Here’s a challenge I want to put out there:
If you truly felt seen and valued, you could handle almost any trial or challenge life throws your way.
After years of coaching and working through my own inner struggles, I’ve come to believe something with increasing clarity:
The essence of being human is to feel seen and valued.
We all want to know—deep in our bones—that it matters we’re here. That someone, or something, truly sees us and considers us worthy.
The Cornerstone of Emotional Intelligence
In emotional intelligence, this foundational concept is called self-regard—the belief that I have value, even when I’m not performing.
It means knowing you are worthy of love on your best days and your worst. That even when you mess up, you’re still deeply valued.
When we have this in place, it becomes the solid ground from which we build our lives. Self-regard fuels joy, contentment, purpose, love, dedication, and emotional resilience. It shapes who we become.
But for many of us, it doesn’t come naturally.
The Lifelong Chase
Much of my life was a pursuit of being seen and valued.
I learned to perform—tell stories, say the right words, play the part—just to get others to affirm: “You matter. You’re someone worth keeping around.”
Think about how much of our world operates on this hidden script.
Social media. Awards. Achievements. Image.
So many of our actions are fueled by the unspoken need:
“Please see me. Please value me.”
This longing is at the heart of what it means to be human.
The Right to Have Needs
One of the most life-altering ideas I’ve encountered came from Dr. E. James Wilder, a powerful voice in human development.
He writes:
“The essence of being human is this— I can have a need, I can express that need, and someone will joyfully meet it without shaming me for asking.”
When I first read that, it seemed too simple. Too ideal.
But as I reflected on my upbringing—one of 14 kids in a home where nurture was rare—I realized: I never experienced that kind of love.
We weren’t taught to ask for what we needed.
If we cried as babies, the door was closed.
If we wanted affection, we had to earn it—through performance, good behavior, achievement.
Sadly, when love becomes transactional, it loses its power to heal.
When Success Isn’t Enough
Some of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve heard are of people who reached extraordinary success—fame, money, public admiration—only to end their lives in despair.
Why?
Because no amount of applause can fill an empty well.
If you’ve never been truly seen and valued, even the loudest crowd can't satisfy the ache.
I think of a songwriter who penned two No. 1 hits in the 1970s. Any one of us might think:
“If I had one song still being played today, I’d never need anything else.”
But that’s not how it works.
Without real, rooted value—without being seen for who you are rather than what you do—even success becomes hollow.
Repairing What Was Never Built
When this kind of value isn’t given in childhood, it becomes one of the hardest things to repair in adulthood.
Brain science shows that being seen and valued as a child literally builds strong neural pathways—“highways of identity”—in the brain.
But for those who never experienced it, there isn’t even a dirt road.
As a coach, I often work with people who score low in self-regard. Their lives have become transactional. They say—often without words—“I’ll perform if you’ll tell me I’m good. I’ll earn your love if you’ll tell me I’m valuable.”
That cycle is exhausting. And it’s deeply human.
The Cry in Relationships
I recently had a conversation with a friend going through marital struggles. From the outside, they have it all—a beautiful home, successful careers, a boat, the dream life.
But neither one feels seen or valued by the other.
I said to him: “If you two truly felt seen and valued, you could live in a trailer and still be happy.”
He paused… and agreed.
That deep need—to be seen and valued just as you are—is more essential than almost anything else in life.
So Let Me Ask You...
- Do you feel seen?
- Do you feel valued, even on days when you accomplish nothing?
- Is your worth tied to who you are—or just what you do?
A Final Thought for the Faith-Oriented
If you believe that the God of the universe sees you and values you—not for your performance but for your personhood—then you’ve discovered the true essence of faith.
And if you’ve been blessed to find a relationship on this earth where you are deeply seen and valued—not for what you offer but for who you are—treasure that gift.
That kind of love answers the cry of the human heart.
